New Delhi: Supreme Court judges have agreed to declare their assets on the apex court's website.
The decision to make the assets of Supreme Court judges public was taken after a two-hour meeting of all the 23 judges in New Delhi on Wednesday evening.
However, the timeline for the disclosure of the assets is still not known.
Sources told CNN-IBN that during the meeting Chief Justice of India Justice KG Balakrishnan relented on disclosure of assets of judges.
Justice Balakrishnan had earlier told CNN-IBN that he didn't want judges to reveal their assets for public information.
The sources said that Justice Balakrishnan changed his mind after a few judges went public with their assets.
The decision to make the assets of SC judges public was taken after Karnataka High Court judge Justice DV Shylendra Kumar declared his assets details on Monday.
Judge Kumar had written an article a few days back claiming that most judges were in favour of declare their assets.
Justice K Kannan of Punjab and Haryana High Court also declared his assets on Sunday while Madras High Court judge Justice K Chandru has also expressed his desire to do so.
Former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee called the decision to make judges' assets public "a radical change".
"This is a very good development… better late than never. This move raises the image of the judiciary," said Sorabjee.
Senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan also welcomes the decision.
"This is a welcome move. It will also now encourage judges of the High Courts to declare their assets. This will also encourage government servants to declare their assets," said Bhushan.
