New Delhi: The Supreme court has refused to stay Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati’s statue building spree in the state.
The Supreme Court has observed after hearing a PIL on the financial wastage in erecting the statues that Noida will retain its Mayawati heritage.
The judiciary won't interfere with what it perceives to be an executive decision.
Petitioner and Lucknow Advocate Ravi Kant says, “If the court views this decisions, it must let every ministers built their statues.”
The PIL, filed by Kant, had complained that over Rs 1,200 crore had gone into creation of the memorials of Dalit icons. He asked the court if the money couldn't have been better utilized for poverty alleviation. UP has a lot of hungry mouths to feed in starvation zones like Bundelkhand.
Meanwhile, BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra says, “Neither there is any illegality nor any violation of environment. Everything has been taken care of.”
The Supreme Court appears to have changed its mind. On June 29, it had asked the UP government to explain the expenses it incurred on installation of statues. On Friday, the court clearly distinguished between the role of the judiciary and the executive.
It observed: If a democratically elected government decides to do something without misappropriating public money there is little courts can do.
