SC rejects UP plea to probe Amitabh land deal

New Delhi: In a mega-relief for superstar Amitabh Bachchan, the Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the Allahabad High Court order that gave a clean chit to the Big B in the Barabanki land deal in Uttar Pradesh.

The Mayawati government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking it to set aside the High Court's verdict.

The UP government contended that Amitabh Bachchan had purchased the land by forging revenue records and hence criminal proceedings should be initiated against him.

However, the apex court said that since the Big B has given up claim over that piece of land, there is no need for criminal proceedings against the star.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice Aftab Alam dismissed the petition, and has restraining the UP government from initiating any criminal, civil or revenue proceedings against the superstar in the case.

The High Court had on December 11, 2007 last given a clean chit to the actor, observing that there was no finding that the actor "himself committed any fraud or manipulated any surreptitious entry in the revenue records".

Senior advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the state government, contended that there was a case of manipulation in revenue records which ultimately benefited Bachchan and it needed to be investigated.

The High Court had disposed of Bachchan's petition challenging the order of Additional Commissioner of Faizabad quashing the allotment of the land in Daulatpur village of Barabanki district.

Amitabh Bachchan's lawyer, Pradeep Rai says, "It is a big relief for Amitabh Bachchan. The court has reiterated the High Court's earlier order and given it a legal stamp of approval. Now, no civil, revenue or criminal proceeding will be carried out against the actor."

Amitabh Bachchan had been charged with:

  • Amitabh Bachchan had bought more than two acres of land in Daulatpur village of Barabanki, UP.
  • He had bought this land on May 11, 1983 claiming that he was a farmer.
  • He is charged with submitting forged documents to prove his credentials as a farmer.

Last year, the court had cancelled the allotment of 2.5 bighas (about 70,000 sq ft) of government land that was allotted to Amitabh Bachchan during the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime.

In January again, the superstar bought around 10 bighas of land from private farmers in Barabanki district's Daulatpur village. He professed that his sole intention in buying land was to build an educational institution.
