New Delhi: The Supreme court’s order of halting the sealing drive till October 31 has provided relief to traders. However, big traders say they are disappointed and dissatisfied with the move.

"We are not sure what will happen to us after the 31st. Uncertainity still hangs. Why can’t they take out a clear plan?" Mocha (pub) owner Shiv Karan says.

The Supreme Court may have halted the ongoing sealing drive till October 31, but the reprieve is temporary. The court has made it clear, post-deadline no more leniency would be shown towards those violating land use norms.

Supreme Court order states the following:

  • No sealing of small shops like grocery stores, stationery shops, cyber cafes and others.
  • Relief from sealing for commercial establishments on over 2,000 notified roads till December 31.
  • No respite for shop owners who have not filed affidavits or don't fall on the notified roads.

"I feel that the order pronounced by the chief justice has not taken care of the humanitarian aspect. We are disappointed," Traders Association head Praveen Khandelwal said.

But for the small grocery-shop owners, the decision has brought great joy. "We are happy that the Supreme Court has shown some consideration for us small shop owners. We are very happy," grocery shop owner Chaudhary Sahaarmal said.

The divide between the big fish and the small time trader seems to have widened by the court orders. Traders feel that this step-fatherly treatment is only going to alienate section within the traders' communities and add fuel to the fire.

In the end, the court order on Friday has only ended up creating more anxiety than allaying fears, which were being expressed by the traders.
