SC stays death penalty given to 3 activists

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday suspended the execution of three AIADMK activists who were found guilty in the Dharmapuri bus burning case.

They were found guilty of setting a bus on fire in February 2000 while protesting party leader Jayalalitha's conviction in the Kodaikanal Pleasant Stay Hotel case. The incident had lead to the death of three girl students from the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.

The three men, who were awarded death sentence by a Salem court, had appealed in the Supreme Court against the sentence.

The Court admitted the petition filed by the three accused and issued notice to Tamil Nadu Government on their plea against the Madras High Court verdict upholding the trial court's decision on their conviction and the sentence.
