SC stays Mayawati's Noida park work

New Delhi: The Supreme Court gave a stay order to the controversial Ambedkar Memorial Park being constructed in Noida, Uttar Pradesh by the Mayawati government adjacent to a bird sanctuary.

In response to a PIL filed by environmentalists, the Supreme Court asked for construction to stop till a complete investigation is undertaken on whether environment laws were flouted.

With a stay already enforced on all similar sites in Lucknow, Mayawati’s ambitious dream of creating Dalit monuments has been grounded at least for now.

The court also issued notice to the Ministry of Environment and Forest to know whether the UP government flouted environmental norms while building the park

Senior advocate Jayant Bhushan said, “The court has ordered all construction to be stopped but plantation work can continue.”

Ironically, senior advocate Harish Salve who is assisting the court in this case came in for some criticism as environmentalists raised questions about him being associated with the case as he had represented the UP government in the Lucknow matters.

While, the construction site is merely 20 feet away from the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, home to some of India's most endangered birds, with the noise and dust pollution, naturalists had expressed their concern over the construction.
