New Delhi: The Supreme Court will take up a review petition filed by former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu against his conviction in a road rage case on Wednesday.

Sidhu was convicted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for his involvement in the death of Gurnam Singh, with whom the former cricketer had a dispute over parking space in 1988.

Siddhu had surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Chandigarh on January 11 and was granted bail by the Supreme Court the day after. He has since moved the apex court for a review of the judgment.

Meanwhile, Gurnam Singh's son Ashok has moved a petition in the Supreme Court seeking enhancement of punishment for Sidhu.

The petitioner has claimed that Sidhu should be charged under Sec 302. The High Court had held Sidhu guilty under Sec 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

The former BJP MP is the party’s star campaigner for the Punjab elections.

BJP not only wants Sidhu for the Amritsar Lok Sabha but they also want him to campaign extensively, especially in areas which are not BJP strongholds.

But the key issue is will the BJP re-nominate Sidhu from his constituency in Amritsar?

Sources reveal that the party will want to nominate him but all depends on how the Supreme Court views the case on Wednesday.
