Scared of beer killer? Stay awake

Mumbai: Mumbai's busy shop steps and areas below flyovers undergo a drastic change during the night - they convert into dormitories for the homeless as well as for the early morning traders in the city.

Says a fish trader, "We don't have any other option. Our work has to start as early as 04:00 AM and sleeping here is the only way out."

It's not only the cold and rain that these people have to brave, it's also the rash, drunk drivers and the occasional pick-pockets -- and the latest threat to them is from a mystery psychotic killer out to get them.

While the odds have even perplexed the police, it's the men on the road who have lost their sleep.

Says a pavement dweller, "Yes we are scared. Most of us have really stopped sleeping. Or we sleep in groups and make sure at least one person stays awake to keep watch."

Says Joint Commissioner Mumbai Police, Arup Patnaik, "We are conducting massive combing operations to find out about the killer. Special squads are also out to keep a tab on people."

Random frisking of people, round the clock vigil as well as special squads out to check every nook and cranny of the city - the Mumbai police is determined to nab the killer. But the question is, in the hundreds of faces that roam the streets of Mumbai, will this be an easy task?
