Scared of cops, Gurjars flee Delhi

New Delhi: Eighty-one-year-old Khemchand is a worried grandfather. His grandson Rajbeer left his home in Ayanagar village in Delhi on June 5, a day after the Gurjar-organised bandh in the Capital.

Rajbeer hasn't returned yet. Like many other young men in Ayanagar, Rajbeer fled home fearing that he would be picked up by the Delhi Police.

"He heard that people were being picked up by the police and being beaten up. He was terrified and so he fled," says Khemchand.

Villagers say over a 100 Gurjar men have left the village in fear of police action.

Says a victim's relative, Bijender, "The police is unnecessarily victimising innocent Gurjars, people who did not even participate in the protest."

Meanwhile, the Gurjar leaders in Delhi are up in arms. They say they will not tolerate police action against innocent Gurjar youths.

Says Gurjar Leader and MLA, Ramveer Singh Bidhuri, "We won't take this lying down. How can you take action against all those innocent Gurjars?"

However, the Delhi Police on its part claims that the reports of innocent Gurjars being victimised are completely unfounded.

Says the PRO of Delhi Police, Deependra Pathak, "The Delhi Police hasn't done anything wrong."

In the meanwhile, even as allegations are being traded, Khemchand waits for his grandson to return home.
