Initial reports say that he was depressed and wanted to avenge his father's suicide for which he held his maternal grandparents responsible.
The student of Class VIII of a school visited his grandparents on Chetla Road in south Kolkata on Monday afternoon.
This 14-year-old student of a reputed south Kolkata school then had lunch and watched television before attacking his aunt Baisakhi with a sickle.
When the grandparents rushed in to help, he attacked them too. The injured trio were rushed to SSKM Hospital. Grandfather of the alleged attacker school boy, Anil Ghosh, 70 and grandmother Chayanika, 67 were administered 18 and 41 stitches, respectively. The 42-year-old aunt whose name is Baisakhi received 35 stitches and is stated to be critical.
Yet, the victims felt the teenager acted under external influences.
"He was thoroughly brainwashed into doing this. Secondly, the violent Hindi films on TV had its adverse effects on him. He was crazy about those films," said Anil Ghosh about his grandson.
While two of the victims were treated and discharged...the teenager's aunt is still under intensive medical care... What's disturbing is that the boy remains unperturbed...
Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Pradip Chattopadhyay said, "We are trying to figure out how he got such an idea after so many days of his father's demise. For now, he appears to be stable."
Neighbours too felt that the boy could have been under tremendous mental stress to have taken such an extreme step.
"He could be harbouring false ideas and that is the reason he could think that his grandparents are responsible for his father's death but actually that may not have happened," said Dr Rima Mukhrejee, a psychiatrist.
The teenaged boy, who lives with his mother and younger sister at his maternal grandparents’ house in Janbazar has been arrested and charged with attempt to murder.
If convicted, he would be sentenced to life imprisonment or upto 10 years in jail.
