Patna: In a new experiment taking place in Bihar, English is being taught over the radio to more than 67 lakh students in over 70,000 government schools.
"At first most children didn't even know about the radio, they heard a radio for the first time in school. But this experiment has really benefited the children as they have have picked up English over the radio," says Shobha Tiwari a teacher by profession.
The Interactive English is Fun radio program is aimed at increasing the understanding of English amongst children in Bihar's villages.
"I've learnt a lot from this radio programme, like saying 'good morning teacher' and replying to someone by saying 'welcome' one they thank me," says student Rakhi Priyadarshi.
The results of the radio programme helping children learn English have been encouraging.
The pre-launch survey indicated 47.9 per cent had average knowledge of English and only 10 per cent were good at the language. However, after the pilot programme, 73 per cent have average knowledge and more than 18 per cent are good.
"We have realised that the children have enjoyed it so much that the number of children who are coming to school has gone up, and the attendance has increased," says BEP director, Rajesh Bhushan.
The state government is encouraged by the response and now wants to set up a community radio in a few schools which would broadcast English lessons for others.
