Scientists create artificial sperm

New Delhi: A new study by scientists in UK claims that it is possible to create sperm cells from bone marrow stem cells.

In the future men may no longer be required for procreation –this news comes after scientists in UK claimed to create sperm cells from human bone marrow.

A medical journal called Reproduction-Gamete Biology states stem cells removed from the human bone marrow and "coaxed" could turn into sperm producing cells called Spermatogonia.

Though these particular spermatogonia did not turn into sperms scientists believe that sperm production from a male or female bone marrow could be possible within another three to five years.

“You can convert bone marrow to any organ in the body like brain, hair, bone, cartilage and so on. Similarly if you treat the bone marrow cells, they will be able to convert into sperm cells,” says Dr Lalit Kumar Prof, Medical Oncology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

If successful, this technique could offer hope for men suffering from infertility. But ethical debates on the threat to the natural process of procreation could slow down the process further.
