New Delhi: The Scottish Rugby 7s team came to New Delhi to acclimatise and get a feel of the city before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The squad was in the capital for a six-day camp. It might be a year in advance but the team was in New Delhi to prepare for the Commonwealth Games.
"Weather back home is different. We are here to acclimatise to weather so we know what to expect next year," said one of the players Scott Forestt.
Many may still have questions on whether Delhi will be ready in time for the Games, but the touring party was confident of the job done so far.
"The facilities we have been provided are great. We passed it on the way,. It is brilliant stadium. There should be no hold ups," said another player Tom Bury.
While they were in New Delhi, the squad received the good news of Rugby 7's, a sport that originated in Scotland, having been accepted as an Olympic sport from 2016.
"Rugby is for the bigger guys. Rugby 7s is for sort of the fairer ones. The acceptance of the sports in 2016 Olympics shows that it is going forward," said Peter Jericevich.
Scotland coach Stephen Gemmell said for Indian audiences who may not understand the difference between the two or even understand the sport at all, there was no reason to not lose heart.
"The sport is more like kabaddi and very fast paced. It will be easy for Indian audiences to pick up. They will like it," said Gemmell.
Delhi is not yet be ready for the Commonwealth Games next year but Commonwealth nations like Scotland will be fully prepared for the Games, come 2010. And in a sport invented in their backyard, the Scottish Rugby 7's team will be gunning for gold.
