New Delhi: At the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance discussing the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Bill, there was a scuffle between Congress Spokesperson Rashid Alvi and BJP leader SS Ahluwalia as Alvi accused Ahluwalia of having leaked the draft to the media.
For proof, Alvi reportedly said he got a phone call from a journalist who mistakenly assumed he was speaking to Ahluwalia.
"He (Alvi) said I had leaked the report which isn't true," said Ahluwalia.
Ahluwalia then allegedly snatched Alvi's phone to see the name of the journalist who had called, thereby escalating the argument.
"He (Ahluwalia) pushed me," said Alvi, adding, "They (BJP) talk about Ram Rajya in which love dominates...it's a place where the lion and the goat can drink from the same lake. Ram rajya should return to the country but if it does, there will be no place for hate. And if there is no place for hate then there is no place for the BJP because they only know the language of hatred."
Amidst the spat between the two leaders, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance on Thursday rejected the draft UIDAI Bill after Alvi gave a dissent note.
During the Alvi-Ahluwalia scuffle, senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha tried to play mediator, but the damage had been done. At a time when Parliamentary democracy is at an all-time low, such behaviour by two senior leaders was surely avoidable.
