London: Police in London are still trying to solve the mystery of abandoned nine-year-old Gurrinder Singh. While the boy is being looked after by a foster family and investigation continues, the case has left the Punjabi community anxious.
Southall in West London has been home to the Indian Punjabi migrants since the early 1950s. It's a close-knit community that holds its Asian values dearly. Which is why they are concerned about this nine year old boy.
Gurrinder Singh was found abandoned at a local bus stop last week, speaks no English, and police are still trying to trace his family. While the case has raised concerns, the priority, for now, is that he is safe and looked after.
Southall Labour MP Virendra Sharma says, “He is with a foster family at present and everyone is making sure that the child is looked after to gain confidence and to get more info out of him.”
Gurrinder says he was left at a bus stop by a 'white' man in his 30s. He claims he is an orphan who's lived in the UK for around 2-3 years in a 3-bedroom house and spent time watching television.
While questioning him, police are also looking at CCTV footage of bus stops in the vicinity for clues. There are also fears of a possible human trafficking connection since in the past raids and arrests have taken place in Southall. But that a 9 year old could possibly be caught in the web is beyond belief.
Punjab radio presenter Hardeep Singh says, “There have been calls and concerns. Also on the Internet lot of heartfelt concern about the case. “
The police have few leads as of now. Apparently Gurrinder hasn't been able to give any names of friends or relatives or even places, information that is normal for a 9 year old to have.
The police say Gurrinder is not physically harmed but is very tired. For now the social services have placed him with a foster family while the police are trying to piece together this peculiar puzzle.
