Security trumps privacy: Govt tells BlackBerr

New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said India wants access to the BlackBerry server after the 60 days grace period. He said if Research in Motion (RIM) can offer access in other countries then why not India.

While speaking in an exclusive interview to CNBC-TV 18, the Home Minister said its the security over privacy in BlackBerry case. He said the 60-day deadline isn't far away.

"We are standing firm and we expect them to give access. If they have earned 60 days trial period so be it. If we are convinced that they are insurmountable then we will accept that. But only if we are convince that they are not insurmountable. If they have offered access in some other jurisdiction certainly we are entitled to have same access too," said Chidambaram.

The Home Minister also spoke on the Naxalism issue and acquisition of land by industrial companies.

Expressing his concern over the acquisition of land by industrial companies, he said "Singur and Nandigram land acquisitions was heavy handed. There was use of armed goons there. We have to approach land issue with great sensitivity. We will not allow extractive industries as they will impact the tribals".

"Naxals have increased attacks on public infrastructure this year. We will not allow armed liberation struggle to succeed in India, " he said.
