New Delhi: India's first woman to graduate from Cambridge and a champion of women's rights, Lotika Sarkar is today without a roof over her head. The former head of the Delhi University Law faculty is fighting for her Rs five-crore property in the Capital.

“I can never give away my house to anyone. That is my only survival. What would I do if its taken away from me. Anyone who says that is talking rubbish. I don’t know how they transferred the property from my name to theirs,” Lotika Sarkar said.

The 86-year-old is having a tough time fending off relatives and friends who are vying for her property.

Unfortunately, Lotika is not the only one. Prem Shekhri, a former school teacher, now faces threat to her life, due to her 300-square-yard property which has caught the attention of local land mafia.

“My life is in danger. I have nobody and they just want me to die,” Prem Shekhri said.

It is believed that out of nine lakh senior citizens in Delhi, 60 per cent face a similar plight.

“After 60 years of age, they shouldn't get into property dealings because they can't judge people henceforth,” Regional Director of Helpage India Mathew Cherian said.

While the city police has intensified its safety drive, they have also asked the elderly to be more vigilant with their property and assets.
