Senior IPS officer Virk made Maharashtra DGP

Mumbai: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer SS Virk has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Home Minister Jayant Patil announced Virk's appointment as Maharashtra DGP on Friday evening.

Patil said Virk has been given the responsibility as his track record is good.

Virk's appointment came after a landmark Bombay High Court judgement on February 5 set aside the appointment of former state DGP AN Roy as invalid and unjustified.

He takes charge after an intense legal battle between three senior IPS officers in the state carried on for over the last several months.

Virk is a Padma Shri awardee and is currently the Maharashtra DGP (Housing). He was on deputation to Punjab for 23 years where he headed the anti-terror operations.
