Seven killed in Bangalore building collapse

CNN-IBN

Bangalore: At least seven people were reported killed and 18 injured when a dilapidated building located in Bharathi Nagar area collapsed late on Tuesday night.

The mishap occurred when a number of people crowded a second floor flat in the building for a function.

The city corporation building was said to be very old. DCP (East), B K Singh was told news agency PTI the injured were taken to different city hospitals.

Officials say overcrowding caused the collapse. “If you start having functions of this sort – 40 people leaning on that balcony – that’s bad,” said S.Subramanya of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

But people say officials should have known the building is weak and alerted them. “Regular inspections happen for private buildings, but when it comes to government accommodation where poor people stay, nothing is done,” said an eyewitness Yasir Mohammad.
