Islamabad: At least seven were killed and 20 others injured when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into a police check post on the outskirts of the North West Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday.
“The suicide bomber was trying to enter Peshawar from Khyber Agency. He exploded himself when police asked him to stop for a search at the Bara Qadeem check post,” SSP (Operations) Abdul Ghafoor Afridi told reporters.
Seven, including six security personnel, were killed in the blast, police officials said. Three Frontier Corps personnel and some schoolchildren were among the injured.
A vehicle of the Frontier Corps, which was passing the check post, was believed to be the target of the attacker. The area was cordoned off by police soon after the powerful blast, which severely damaged nearby houses.
The condition of several of the injured was described as critical. An emergency was declared in hospitals in Peshawar and doctors who were on leave were called in for duty.
The attack came after a major operation was launched by the Frontier Corps against the Taliban in Dir and Buner districts of the NWFP. More than 200 militants have been killed so far by the security forces in intense fighting in these areas.
