Cyclone approaches; Orissa, AP on high alert

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A severe cyclonic storm is heading towards India's eastern sea coast.

The MET office has said that the high-intensity cyclone can hit the coast within the next 48 hours.

The cyclone, whose wind speeds are touching 150 Km/hour is currently about 360 Km west-north-west of Port Blair.

The Andhra Pradesh and Orissa governments have alerted districts all along the coastline.

In Orissa, disaster rapid action force is already being moved to areas that are likely to be hit by the cyclone.

Orissa's Special Relief Commissioner, N K Sundaray has said, "An eye has already been formed in the cyclone and once that is formed, there is very little chance of it getting weakened. We are taking all possible steps to face this very severe cyclone."

The MET department has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

This cyclone has been described as the most severe since the cyclone of 1999, which had killed more than 10,000 people in Orissa.
