Srinagar: The Dukhtaran-e-Millat is at it again. The outfit, which shot into headlines after demanding mandatory burqa for women, now wants curtains drawn on the state government's proposal to introduce sex education in schools.
”If the education department does not listen to us, the whole nation would be on the streets,” says Chairperson, Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Asiya Andrabi.
Most of the schools in the Valley stick to Board of State Education and NCERT syllabi, which right now don't include sex education. But some private schools teach the subject and claim it would create awareness among the youth about AIDS.
"We are associated with an NGO Jagriti. They are coming regularly to implement this touchy issue especially in the valley,” says Principle, Delhi Public School, Srinagar, K K Sharma.
Meanwhile, the state education department has formed a 22-member committee to study whether sex education should be part of textbooks.
"When we implement the moral teachings, it would automatically address the issue of sex education and aids awareness,” says Education Minister, J&K, Peerzada.
