Sex education not a taboo worldwide

New Delhi: Now all over the world sex education is seen as an intrinsic part of public health. As the threat of AIDS looms large al over the world children are encouraged to know about use of condoms and disease.

Sex education is an integral part of school syllabi worldwide. It is increasingly being seen as a vital public health strategy, but not in the US and UK, where the administrations back abstinence, because of pressure from conservative groups there.

In France, sex education has been part of school curricula since 1973. Schools are expected to provide 30 to 40 hours of sex education and distribute condoms, to students in grades eight and nine.

While in Germany sex education has been part of school curricula since 1970.

It normally covers all subjects that concern the growing-up process, physical changes, biological process of reproduction, homosexuality, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, sometimes even sex-positions.

In many African nations, where AIDS is at epidemic levels, international organisations such as Planned Parenthood consider that broad sex education programs have global benefits, such as controlling the risk of overpopulation and the advancement of women's rights.

The existence of AIDS has given a new sense of urgency to the topic of sex education. It remains to be seen how conservative countries react to this challenge.
