Shakespeare's Indian 'voice' now goes solo

Mumbai: Time may have caught up with him, but Partap Sharma, is back to doing what he does best -- lending his voice to an audio book series on the plays of Shakespeare.

After the success of his previous audio books on Julius Caeser and The Merchant of Venice, he's now recording for Macbeth.

And it comes as no surprise that the man with the golden voice needs no advertising or publicity for his work. The commercial success of his previous audio books has been purely through word of mouth.

"Agencies called me up for more copies. Then they called again and duplicated 1,000 CDs," says he.

Sharma, the man they call simply 'the voice' has voiced all the characters in the plays, from the three witches to Macbeth himself -- an aural treat.

The series is also testimony to the writer documentary filmmaker and actor's fighting spirit as he battles with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema.

Diagnosed with the condition four years ago, he wasn't given much of a chance by doctors, but Sharma proved them wrong.

"I told them they were ignorant and that there has to be a cure. I did yoga and I am optimistic," says he.

Sharma is now looking forward to continuing the Shakespeare series of which Macbeth will release later next month.
