Shantanu-Nikhil behind Sania-Shoaib wardrobe

New Delhi: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in Hyderabad on Monday in a ceremony that was open to just family and close friends. The newlyweds had a special guest too - Sahara boss Subroto Roy. The mehendi ceremony will be held on Tuesday, followed by the sangeet and a reception on April 15.

The marriage took place after a few hiccups and a quick divorce for Shoaib from his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui.

While Sania sported a red saree, which belonged to her mother, Shoaib's slick black shervani was Shantanu-Nikhil designer creation.

"We have done two shervani for Shoaib Malik," says Shantanu Mehra.

The duo has also designed outfits for Sania's two wedding receptions, one in Hyderabad and the other in Lahore.

"We have done a kurta with a khada dupatta for her wedding reception and a lehenga," says Shantanu.

If Shantanu and Nikhil are to be believed, the tennis star is always game for a little adventure and her lehenga would be one of a kind.

"She is a tall girl and has a nice torso. We have experimented with the lehenga in terms of silhouette. It is not a kalida lehenga. So you would see a lot of layering, colour and deep flouncy feel to it. Sania is someone who does not like bright colors, so it is pastels and earthy tones with colour accents," says Nkhil.

If Sania is open to experiment, then the groom likes to keep it mellow.

"We have done a shervani for Shoaib who is very conservative. So the shervani is a bit tweaked and paired with slim trousers. Instead of two pockets we have given him one," says Nikhil.

Moreover, designing for the two sports stars was no easy task.

"It was going down the Mughal era with motifs and techniques. So there's Mukeshzari studded with Swaroski crystals which are gothic." the designers say.

Incidentally, the designer duo had also dressed Sania up for her first red carpet appearance back in 2008.

"We did the first red carpet moment when she wore a bandage dress for a Cosmopolitan award. That was the time when she actually started wearing the formal gowns. She has obviously become very focused on what she should wear for the evenings," says Shantanu.

"She has a fit body and she likes to be very contemptary silhauttes like high waisted skirts," adds Nikhil.

Clearly Sania has come a long way since.
