Kochi: Former United Nations under-secretary general Shashi Tharoor, who was nominated by the UPA Government as India's candidate to contest for the UN Secretary General's post, is likely to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket.
Tharoor, who was present at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday evening at a rally addressed by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, did not rule out the possibility while talking to a local television channel.
Congress sources said while Tharoor was not expected to join the party, he is likely to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Kerala on a Congress ticket.
However, no meeting has been scheduled between Tharoor and Sonia Gandhi, who is staying in Kochi for Monday night before departing for Lakshadweep on Tuesday after addressing the state conference of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, they said.
Sonia Gandhi, who addressed a public rally in Kochi on Monday evening, is likely to meet representatives of nearly 25 political and social organisations at the Government Guest House on Monday night.
Notable among those who will call on her are Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders Mohd. Shihab Thangal and P K Kunhalikutty.
However, no meeting has been scheduled with any Church leaders, who have been having a running battle with the state LDF Government, the sources said.
