She arranges weddings in dozens

New Delhi: Arranging one wedding can be difficult. But one woman has been arranging a dozen of marriages, all to be held on the same day for the past seven years and making a lot of brides very happy.

“I always dreamed of having a grand wedding. Everyone gets married in a temple, but for me I wanted a nice wedding otherwise it's no fun,” said a bride Anshu Chaudhary.

A dream that is coming true for Anshu. With an elderly father and an unwell mother, Anshu's been supporting her family for a long time. Finally it's her turn to get some support.

Help comes in the form of Vijay Kohli, who set up a charitable trust in memory of her husband and arranges mass weddings for couples who can't afford to pay for it themselves – a gesture that doesn't go by unappreciated.

“She's made my dreams come true,” said Anshu during the mehendi ceremony.

Kohli's married 57 couples ever since she hit upon the idea of paying for mass weddings in 2001.

And it's not just the ceremony; she also makes sure none of the brides go home empty-handed.

“Everyone asks me why I give them a dowry, but I don't see it as a dowry. They're needy and I see it as essentials they don't have,” said Guru Kirpa Charitable Society Chairperson Vijay Kohli.

Essentials like sewing machines, beds and clothes are some of the things Kohli and her friends gift every couple. They don't solicit donations; they only give what they can afford.

“I want the kind of life where we have everything we need and we are never left wanting for anything,” said Anshu after her wedding.

With husbands their families picked for them and the kind of wedding they never thought they could have, the girls want to start their new life on the same note they started this day – with happiness.
