Mumbai: Sheetal Mafatlal, president of Mafatlal Luxury, is under arrest for carrying jewellery whose true value she allegedly didn’t disclose to Customs officials.
Mafatlal, who was detained at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport on Saturday, has been booked under sections of the Indian Customs Act and will be produced before a magistrate's court in Esplnade.
Customs officials detained Mafatlal at the airport after getting a tip-off and recovered jewellery estimated to be between Rs 51 lakh and one crore from her bag.
The worth of the jewellery is yet to be ascertained. Mafatlal's lawyer Satish Maneshinde said that his client’s arrest was a conspiracy by the "disgruntled opponent" of Atulya, her husband and scion of Mafatlal industries.
"Sheetal was arrested on Saturday night when she was returning from London after the police was tipped by some disgruntled opponent of the Mafatlal family and industry," said Maneshinde.
Sheetal had 51 items in her possession including bangles, chains and rings and the most valuable jewellery was worth Rs 2.5 lakh, he said adding that he would file bail application.
"The jewellery was given to her by her father-in-law and were used ones. According to a Supreme Court ruling, if the value of the gold is less than Rs one crore and the duty is less than Rs 30 lakh then the offence is bailable," he said.
The court send Mafatlal to judicial custody till June 12 and will hear her bail application on Tuesday.
