I'll return to home: Sheikh Hasina

New Delhi: Bangladesh's military-backed government has restricted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's entry into the country but she remains defiant saying she will return.

Just a few days ago Sheikh Hasina told CNN-IBN, “We liberated the country, it is our country, why shouldn't I go back. I'm reaching Dhaka on April 23.”

But the Army-backed caretaker government in Bangladesh has other plans for Sheikh Hasina – they have issued orders to restrict her entry into the country, according to Bangladeshi news reports.

Meanwhile, in a phone interview to CNN-IBN, Hasina hit back saying she was taken aback by her virtual forced exile and she would return to face all charges.

“The government doesn’t want democracy to survive but I will return. They had earlier asked me to delay my return. Why should I? I want to come back to face all charges,” Hasina said.

Earlier this week, Hasina had claimed the murder charge against her was filed as soon as she demanded early elections. It's this sort of defiance that the government says will create a law and order problem should she return.

But the instructions to block her entry, they insist, are temporary. However, that is not so with Khaleda Zia, who on Tuesday, reportedly accepted voluntary exile to Saudi Arabia.

Observers see the caretaker government trying to rid Bangladesh of the bitter, often personal feuding that has crippled politics in the country for over 15 years.

But these moves will pose an unfamiliar challenge of creating effective leadership to two political parties, the BNP and Awami League.
