New Delhi: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina landed in Dhaka on Monday evening after the government lifted a brief ban on her returning home.
The head of the Awami League party, who led the country from 1996-2001, returned amid tight security.
Senior leaders of her Awami League greeted her after she arrived on an Etihad Airways flight.
"She arrived safely on an Etihad Airways flight at about 4:40 pm (16:10 IST), said airport security officer M A Awal.
Hasina was originally due to come home on April 19 after a holiday in the United States, where her son and daughter live, but was stranded in London after Bangladesh's army-backed interim government ordered airlines and immigration to block her return.
Two weeks after her last attempt when she was stopped from boarding a flight to Bangladesh Hasina says she was prepared to face being arrested at her arrival in Dhaka.
Hasina had also admitted that she could be possibly arrested at her arrival in Dhaka, but she was determined to work towards restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.
