New Delhi: A sessions court in Jharkhand has acquitted former coal minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha president Shibu Soren in the Chirudih massacre case.
Soren was acquitted for want of evidence and was given the benefit of doubt along with 13 others. He was among the 21 accused in the case. A chargesheet had been filed against 69 persons.
Soren had allegedly instigated his party workers to kill non-tribals. His party-men torched 12 houses in Chirudih village in January, 1975, and killed 11 people.
Six of the accused have been found guilty.
“Justice has triumphed,” PTI quoted Soren as saying, in the wake of the verdict.
Soren had been forced to quit the union cabinet in 2004 after a non-bailable warrant had been issued against him.
Soren had been earlier absolved of murdering his private secretary by a Delhi court more than a year ago.
Another case, the Kurko double murder which took place in 1974 over the killing of a goat, is still continuing against Soren.
