Ranchi: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren on Saturday staked claim to form a new government in Jharkhand. He handed over to the governor a list of 43 legislators supporting him in the 81-member assembly.
Soren met Governor K Shankaranaryan at the governor's house at 1500 hrs ISI.
The JMM, which won 18 seats in the recently-concluded Assembly poll, has got the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All Jharkhand Students Union to form the government.
BJP leader and former chief minister Arjun Munda on Saturday announced that the party was extending support to the JMM to form a new government.
The BJP also elected Raghubar Das as its legislative party leader.
Congress has made it clear that it was not in a hurry to initiate talks for government formation in Jharkhand and would do so without any preconditions.
While Congress has 14 seats, its ally Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik has 11 MLAs.
