Actor Shilpa Shetty is once again in the eye of a storm and this time for Hollywood actor Richard Gere placing a few pecks on her cheek at an AIDS awareness event in Delhi.
Shilpa said there was nothing wrong with it but the moral brigade hits the streets even as the cause of AIDS awareness seems to have been overshadowed.
Do incidents like Gere-Shetty kiss and the way the media has covered it in someway take away from the cause - the larger cause of AIDS awareness? Is that a danger when dealing with celebrities?
Rajdeep Sardesai discussed this issue with NAZ Foundation CEO Anjali Gopalan on CNN-IBN’s show Face The Nation.
Talking about the whole episode what happened during the recent AIDS awareness show, Gopalan said, ”I think there are two different issues here. Clearly does take away from the cause. If you look at this event, you had someone like Sunny Deol really connect with the truckers. He spoke in Punjabi and one didn’t even hear what he had to say.”
“There was tremendous response from the truckers to Shilpa and to Richard and that too get sidelined. And we see this one little snippet being played through out the day and I am pretty sure that this is what actually incited, the kind of responses you see. To someone like me who is being working in the field so many years I feel so sad today because it’s like nothing all exists,” she added.
The manner in which the 24-hour news channel covered this event, do you believe that it should have been balanced by the fact that we should have shown what sunny Deol had to say speaking in Punjabi to truckers who really need to be addressed when it comes to the issue of AIDS?
“Absolutely why not and listen the whole thing of using celebrities. They are good to use for mass appeal. Look at the reach they have and all over the world for these kind of causes celebrities have been used. Its unfortunate that a certain incident, which I think was not pre-planned at all, I just think that it has been blown out of proportion,” Gopalan answered.
Talking about the celebrities helping in spreading AIDS awareness, Gopalan said that celebrities do have a role to play. One can’t negate that role and every little bit is going to help the cause.
“It’s only when we completely forget the cause and only focus on these guys there is a problem,” she added.
