New Delhi: The Congress was left embarrassed on Thursday after Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde took an unwarranted jibe at Samajwadi Party leader Jaya Bachchan as the Rajya Sabha discussed the Assam violence.

As Shinde spoke, Jaya sought to intervene, to which the newly-appointed Home Minister said, "Please... this is a serious issue.. not a filmy one."

The remark caused an uproar in the Rajya Sabha, with BJP leader Arun Jaitley saying that as the Home Minister, Shinde could not taunt other honourable members of Parliament.

Shinde immediately apologised, saying, "If my comments have hurt Jayaji, I apologise. She is like my sister..."
