Mumbai: Indian authorities have detained a ship and are questioning its six crew members and two security guards. The crew of MV Danacia Sunrise was intercepted by Indian Coast Guard vessel Subhadra Kumari Chauhan on April 17 at 10 PM and its crew has now been questioned for over 36 hours by a team of Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad and Intelligence Bureau officials.
The ship, which was coming to Mumbai from Kuwait, was intercepted by the Indian Coast Guard on the basis of a Research and Analysis Wing alert. The two guards posted on the ship are of British origin and former British army soldiers.
National Security Guards officials from the Mumbai NSG hub have also gone on board MV Danacia Sunrise with their sniffer dogs.
Currently conversations that have taken place via satellite phones on the ship are being analysed.
Prima facie investigations reveal that some call data was erased, while a couple of calls were made to USA and some other foreign countries.
Sources within the security agencies have confirmed to CNN-IBN that the crew has confessed to throwing at least two AK-47 rifles into the sea.
The officials say that even though the ship is a registered cargo vessel, but it is not carrying any cargo. They are also trying to find out why two British-origin security guards were deployed on the ship if there was no cargo.
Moreover, the security guards are unarmed and how would they have protected the ship without weapons? If the weapons were meant for self protection, then what was the need of throwing the weapons in deep sea?
The ship crew has informed that the ship came to Mumbai to disembark the two security guards whose contracts are being terminated on Tuesday.
The British duo was to fly back to their country later on Tuesday.
