New Delhi: Mahashivratri is being observed across the country today.

Special pujas and other events are scheduled in temples throughout the day.

Devotees of lord Shiva are observing fasts and offering prayers at temples since early morning.

Thousands of devotees fasted and thronged temples dedicated to Hindu god Shiva across Orissa on the occasion.

Security was tightened at the 11th century Lingaraj temple as about 15,000 people visited the shrine early morning and many more were expected by the end of the day, a police official.

Amid tight security, over four-lakh devotees offered prayers at the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

Mahashivratri is believed to be the oldest of the Hindu festivals.

Parliament will not be in session and stock markets will remain closed for the festival on Thursday.
