Shiv Sena protests power tariff hike

Mumbai: Reliance Energy's main office at Santacruz in Mumbai was witness to scenes of angry Shiv Sainiks protesting against the price hike by the company.

For the party, which has been searching for issues to support and boost its flagging morale, the power tarriff hike price hike has been Godsend.

The Shiv Sena is sparing little effort in identifying with the plight of the powerless masses and Reliance Energy just might end up paying heavily if they do not retract their move.

Says Shiv Sena leader, Anil Parab, "If Reliance Energy does not reduce these rates, we will start a campaign of not paying the bills."

That's not all, the Shiv Sena has tougher questions for the energy major.

"I want to ask them, till last year Reliance Energy was saying that they were making profits. So all of a sudden how come there is this loss that you have to overcharge customers for this," asks Parab.

And if you thought that the Sena was the only party to protest, other parties like the Raj Thackeray led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena too have jumped into the fray.

"We hope that this problem is sorted out at the earliest and even the Shiv Sena wants the same thing," says Raj Thackeray.

The pressure tactics seem to have surely worked at least for now, with Reliance Energy deciding to lessen the impact and charge 32 paise per unit over the next 18 months, instead of the earlier rate of 97 paise.

For the consumers at least, while its not a major rebate, there is some relief in the interim, but it looks to be a power battle that has just begun.
