Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan is at the centre of another outsider debate after Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna praised Rajini for supporting the Tamil cause in the Hogenakkal water issue despite his Maharashtrian and Kannadiga roots.
"You tell me whether I have contributed to the city or not,” Amitabh Bachchan said after he found himself dragged into the debate.
Bachchan is clearly irritated by being made a peg of the Marathi Manus versus outsider debate. But neither Raj Thackeray nor the Shiv Sena seem keen about leaving him out of this.
In its Saamna article on the Hogenakkal project controversy, Sena advised Bachchan to follow in the footsteps of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth.
The article states: “Rajinikanth is a Kannadiga by birth, was educated in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu just gave him fame. But in these troubled times, he still stood for Tamil Nadu."
The article goes on to say: "There are hundreds of people who become stars in Mumbai. But when a question of protecting your culture arises, even superstars like Amitabh back out."
Despite all that, the Sena leadership is just not willing to accept what's been published in their magazine.
"The story is about Rajinikanth and not Amitabh. He is a great star and we respect him," Shiv Sena Spokesperson Sanjay Raut tries to clarify.
But on the other side, it's Amitabh who wants the Sena and the MNS to back off. The veteran actor wants nothing of a debate that demands that actors should display their loyalties to their state of residence.
