Click to play videoMumbai: The Shiv Sena has lashed out at the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for criticising singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle who had opposed the Peddar Road flyover.
The flyover planned 16 years ago to ease heavy traffic was put on the backburner after opposition from local residents and singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.
On Saturday, Mumbai guardian minister Jayant Patil hinted that the project could be scrapped and the move was immediately slammed by MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
"There was opposition from local residents for other projects too, but there the government did not listen. Why only listen to residents of Peddar Road? Is government under pressure because famous personalities live here?" he said.
With an eye firmly on upcoming civic elections, the Shiv Sena too jumped into the fray with Uddhav Thackeray indirectly slamming his cousin Raj in a statement.
"It is astonishing that the same people who asked for rules to be modified so that more FSI could be given to Sachin Tendulkar for his bungalow, are now using the Peddar road issue to criticise symbols of Marathi pride like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle," he said.
The Congress-NCP government though was quick to deny that the flyover had been scrapped.
"Peddar road flyover should be built. It is the responsibility of the state government. I request all parties to support us in building the bridge rather than putting a halt," said Sachin Ahir, MoS, Urban Development.
While Peddar road is unlikely to see a flyover anytime soon, another much needed yet much delayed flyover in the eastern suburbs will be inaugurated on Thursday and Congress-NCP government will take credit for it.
The Shiv Sena heading the BMC has also been on a spree of inaugurations over the last few weeks. Urban infra is very much in focus with corporation elections just round the corner.
