London: Author and columnist Shobha De seems to have taken her latest vocation as a designer pretty seriously. Close on the heels of her Mumbai launch, Shobha showcased her sari collection at a private gathering of NRIs in London. And just like her novels, she seems to be building quite an international following for her designs as well.
Designing may be a new vocation for Shobha but she's already 'thinking big' and eyeing a bold and independent clientele.
“Ideally the collection is for the global Indian women who are traditional and also ready to take on the world,” says Shobha.
The author-turned-designer says that her love affair with the sari began at a young age. “My first sari was my older sister’s. I will never forget that I changed my body language after wearing it. I felt so grown up and graceful,” Shobha says nostalgically.
Shobha is not the first celebrity to embrace designs and drapes but do celebrity-turned designers translate into good business?
“Kate Moss has done a line and so have Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham. Yes, Shobha is a celebrity but you do need to understand fashion. Can't comment on others joining in but this is definitely a long association,” says MD, Genesis Colors, Sanjay Kapoor who will be marketing Shobha’s label.
The collection is inspired by the Oriental lotus and bamboo motifs and the slinky tops add to the Page 3 type wardrobe. The idea, says Shobha is to take the traditional six-yard stretch of cloth and give it a contemporary twist.
And going by the response to the collection, it seems Shobha’s cocktail saris are already a bestseller.
