New Delhi: Indian clay target shooter Ronjan Sodhi equalled his won world record a few weeks back but still ended up second best.
Ronjan is India's next big thing in clay target shooting and the silver medal at the recent World Cup in Belarus is indicator of his talent.
Ronjan equalled his world record of 194/200 only to see Chinese Hu Binyuan break it to take gold.
"Well I had it for 10 seconds before he shot and broke it. So for 10 seconds I had two world records. It was nice because it was very important to shoot high scores. It gives you a lot of confidence," reveals Ronjan.
Ronjan has been India's most successful double trap shooter for more than two years now. Despite being the man-in-form he missed the bus to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and that hurt is now spurring him on. He has been in two back to back World Cup finals in the last month.
"I peaked in the last moment. Initial few years I was not shooting really well. But this time around things would be different because I guess since 2007 I have been consistently performing, making world cup finals every year, picking up medals in the world cup for the last three years," says Ronjan.
Ronjan has his eye firmly on the target - the quota place or qualification spot for the 2012 Olympics opens next year and he's wants no repeat of Beijing.
"This year was more of trial and error. Things which we wanted to try in competitions. I am sure everybody else must have tried things because next year you can't really take a chance with any world cup... because quota place being at stake you want to be at your best performance and best of you form," he says.
Ronjan and his teammates now are off to Italy for a training camp ahead of the Shotgun World Championships.
