Kolkata: On Sunday just a few hundred metres from West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's residence in Kolkata three people were injured after a mobile phone thief opened fire.
A passerby caught the aftermath of a gory shooting spree on camera even as one of three injured victims writhed in pain after being shot at.
Eyewitness Bappa Ghosh took the video on his mobile phone only minutes after the shooting ended.
"We thought he was thief so we ran after him. He was brandishing a gun and then he fired first in the air and then at people," says Bappa Ghosh.
The thief, Mohammad Aslam, fired at three people, and stopped shooting only when he ran out of ammunition. Police say the incident began on a train nearby, when Aslam snatched a passenger’s mobile phone and fled.
"To make his escape good he fired at the person who was chasing him and in the process got into Kolkata police area. He was running along Bandel Road and in the process it seemed he fired at least twice," Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kolkata (South Division), Rajesh Subarno.
Police recovered a knife and a pistol from Aslam and have begun an inquiry into the incident. But the eyewitness video raises the question of just how a man with a gun managed to get so close to one of Kolkata's most sensitive locations.
The shooting took place just 200 meters away from the CM's residence and shows how insecure the Kolkatans are.
