Click to play videoCochin: Kerala's famous Allepey district, also known as the Venice of the East, has got its own unique gondola. Launched on June 7, the government-run supermarket called Triveni is a floating wonder that functions as the friendly neighbourhood supermarket.
ConsumerFed's brainchild, Triveni is on a mission to bring daily essentials at subsidised rates to the doorsteps of remote islanders in Kerala's Allepey district.
“There are over 11 lakh people living in these backwaters. We want to bring basic commodities to them at cheaper rates,” Managing Director of ConsumerFed Dr Regi Nair said.
Everything from ketchup to soap, the islanders can pick from a range of nearly 2,000 items in Triveni's store.
Looking forward to the benefits of the floating supermarket, Chinnamani, a housewife said, “It will really be a helpful thing for the general public like us living in far off areas and also benefit in getting good quality goods with better or cheaper prices. I think this will be a big attraction for the poor people.”
The supermarket will cover the Kuttanad area and drop anchor at various locations after consulting locals. “This will be a relief and helpful for people like us living in far off regions,” a panchayat member Purushothaman said.
The 1,000-square-foot solar-powered vessel, which cost Rs 50 lakh to build, isn't just maintenance free. It's also fitted with an internet facility. And now the world's largest floating superstore is also hoping to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.
