Shopian: The bodies of the two women in the Shopian rape and murder case in Jammu and Kashmir were exhumed on Monday by a team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and fresh DNA samples taken.

The bodies of Neelofar Jan and her sister-in-law Asiya Jan were dug up after the doctor who had earlier done the autopsy confessed she fudged the vaginal swabs.

"Our aim is to bring out the facts. People too have supported us. We want the doctors to be punished," said Shopian District Magistrate AM Khanday.

The exhumation was ordered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which took up the case a few days back.

The decision to exhume the bodies ended 47 days of violent protests by the residents of Shopian who suspect the two women were raped and killed by security forces.

Averse to the earlier probe by SIT and dismissive of the Jan report, Shopian residents are this time confident that CBI will solve the case.

"We have trust the CBI. The exhumations are right and has been done to secure justice'' said Mohammad Shafi Khan, Chairman of Shopian Local Committee.

The forensic experts have collected enough samples this time and will send them to the forensic lab in Delhi for analysis hoping it will help solve one of the most high-profile cases in Kashmir in recent times.
