Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Arun Shorie, who is known for speaking out his mind, has come out strongly against the Liberhan Commission report on the demolition of Babri Masjid. Shourie in an exclusive interview with CNN-IBN lashes out at Liberhan Commission termed the report “absolutely idiotic”.
Bhupendra Chaubey: There is going to be a debate in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha over the Liberhan Commission report, the Ayodhya movement and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being very closely associated with it. Having read the report what is your first response?
Arun Shourie: It is an absolutely idiotic report and for 17 years public money has been wasted on this gentleman and his staff. It has the most elementary errors. I went through the report and there are so many howlers in it, like the karsewaks cannot be identified but they were this that and other. If you can't identify them how do you know their characters?
Bhupendra Chaubey: The man who was not even called for questioning like Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been held guilty.
Arun Shourie: From Mr Vajpayee to Govindacharya, the commissions of inquiry are obliged under section 8b to issue a notice that if your reputation is going to be affected by anything that the commission may say but it doesn't happen and he has a new phrase called pseudo moderate. How do you know? Please remember, it is not just a commission of inquiry but the man was a judge and may be that is the kind of judgements you are been given.
Bhupendra Chaubey: But let me ask you a political question related to Ram Janambhoomi movement itself. There is a view which has been held that post 2004 when attempts were made by the BJP to position itself as a more inclusive party somehow the Ram Janambhoomi movement became a noose around BJP leaders' necks.
Arun Shourie: That's bunk. I was a strong supporter of Ayodhya movement because one of the principle corrections that was required to Indian public discourse since independence was on the perversion of the meaning of the word secular. And the movement which got personified by Mr Advani was a very strong corrective in that regard. You can't fire the same bullet twice. The time has passed. Today the issue is delivery.
