Thiruvananthapuram: A senior Kerala Communist Party of India-Marxist leader has been arrested in connection with the murder of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker Abdul Shukkoor.
CPI-M leader P Jayarajan was arrested by the special police team investigating the Shukkoor murder case. The special team served a notice on Jayarajan to appear before the team at 11 AM on Wednesday for questioning. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by Kannur First class Magistrate.
The CPI(M) has called for a strike in Kerala on Thursday to protest against Jayarajan's arrest. Sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from Kannur where the district authorities have issued prohibitory orders for Wednesday and Thursday.
Jayarajan, who is the CPI(M) district secretary, has been questioned twice in connection with the murder case to unravel the conspiracy angle of the case.
IUML worker Abdul Shukkoor had been stabbed to death at Keezhara on February 20 allegedly in retaliation for the attack on Jayarajan and one Rajesh at nearby Ariyil on the same day.
They had been admitted to the Co-operative Hospital at Taliparamba.
The conspiracy part of the murder had surfaced following the arrest of CPI(M) Ariyil local secretary UV Venu and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Taliparamba block president AV Babu after one of them disclosed that the plot to kill Shukkoor had been hatched at the hospital.
