Shutters to fall for Brit Council libraries

Lucknow: Come February 29, British Council libraries will be shut down in Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram.

It’s a decision readers are not willing to accept in the two cities and have launched a protest in Bhopal while those in Thiruvananthapuram are very disappointed.

Says a long-time library member, Suresh, “It is shocking that such a wonderful library is being shut down. In Thiruvanthapuram, we don’t have any such quality library, which is maintained so well. It caters to all students and professional. It is so sad to see it getting shut.”

But the Council is unmoved.

Deputy Director, Les Dangerfield explains, “We are diverting resources as part of our new strategy to reach out to more people.”

The British Council had shut down their library in Lucknow 10 years ago.

Avid book-lover Ram Advani sadly recalls, “When our library was closed we also protested but nothing much happened. It was such a nice place.”

But the book-loving denizens of Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram are refusing to take the move lying down. They have even extended their campaign to the world-wide web. Besides blogs that are trying to highlight their case, the ‘Save the BCL ' community on social-networking Orkut is growing everyday.

However, with the BCL firm on its decision to close the two libraries, it looks unlikely that their efforts will yield any result.
