New Delhi: Former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu spent a quiet night in the VIP cell of Patiala Central Jail on Thursday after the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Chandigarh sent him and his co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu there on 14 days' judicial remand. Both have been kept in the same cell.
Patiala happens to be Sidhu's home town and his doctor wife and children reside there. When Sidhu entered the Jail around 1700 hours clad in a track suit and a dark turban, none of the family members were present.
A large number of BJP workers led by BJP district chief Anil Bajaj, SAD candidate from Patiala Surjit Singh Kohli and district president for SAD(urban) Indermohan Singh Bajaj gathered here and raised slogans against the Punjab government.
It was legal necessity for the two to surrender in the court before the Supreme Court takes up his appeal for staying the conviction in a road rage case. The Apex Court is scheduled to hear the petition on Friday.
The former cricketer-turned-politician and Sandhu have been convicted of culpable homicide and sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for the death of a man in Patiala in 1989.
Incidentally, when Sidhu was taken to the Patiala Central Jail on Thursday afternoon, it broke him vow not to enter Patiala after being elected a Member of Parliament from Amritsar. The BJP leader kept his promise and stayed in Amritsar till his resignation as an MP following his conviction. He had resigned from Parliament on December one after his conviction.
