Sidhu gets bail after a night in jail

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Navjot Singh Sidhu after he spent a night in Patiala Central Jail on Thursday. The court has, however, deferred a hearing on his appeal for a stay on his sentence till January 17.

A Bench headed by Justice G P Mathur directed the former BJP MP to furnish a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and a surety of the same amount before the Chief Juducual Magistrate of Patiala.

The Patiala CJM had sent Sidhu to the Patiala Central Jail on Thursday after he had surrendered to the court along with his co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu. The former cricketer-turned-politician spent Thursday night in the VIP cell of the Patiala Central Jail.

Sidhu has been sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment by Punjab and Haryana High Court in a case of culpable homicide. The court had held him responsible in the road rage case that led to the death of Gurnam Singh in 1988.

Deferring a hearing on his appeal seeking suspension of the conviction and sentence, the Bench issued a notice to the Punjab Government on the same. Sidhu is seeking a suspension of his conviction and sentence so that he can contest the bypolls to the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency, which he had vacated last month following his conviction on December 1.
