Gangtok: Traditionally known for its spiritual way of life and age-old monasteries, Sikkim is now a vibrant tourism destination. While this Northeastern state retains it's grandeur and culture, many other attractions are fast sprouting up and tourists are loving it.
Breathtaking vistas, an icy mountain breeze that brushes past strings of colourful prayer flags - this is Sikkim, the land of spirituality and world famous monasteries.
Says a tourist, Dr Sunil Gupta, "It's a wonderful experience. I always wanted to come here."
But for those who think that Sikkim is just a spiritual quest, there are other attractions and more worldly pursuits like shopping, which come with an ethnic touch and a hefty price tag!
Says a curio shop owner in Gangtok, Babu Kasakya, "The prices go up to lakhs at times. Foreign buyers often pay good price for the artifacts."
But Sikkim's also picking up many urban trends. Gangtok is home to several discotheques and night clubs that ensure that you don't get the Saturday night blues, even if you're on your way to attaining Nirvana.
Says Pema Ladakhi of Club X-Cape in Gangtok, "There has been a huge transition in the last five years. There are so many night clubs and lounge bars here."
On an average more than 2 lakh tourists visit Sikkim each year. Whether it's trekking, attaining "inner peace" or just plain fun, Sikkim has something for everyone.
